To the Hogan Family we send our sincere condolences. Joe to me personified the Greatest Generation. A child of the Great Depression, he enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating from high school in 1943. He went on to a distinguished judicial career, being appointed by Massachusetts Gov. Edward King as Clerk/Magistrate of the Natick District Court. He was knowledgeable, fair and respectful to all; and constantly took time to explain confusing judicial procedures to many unrepresented people who had business before the court. He was repeatedly elected president of the Massachusetts Clerk/Magistrates Association, where he led state-wide efforts to improve judicial administration, and upgrade staff pay and working conditions. For attorneys, judges, fellow clerk/magistrates and other officials, Joe was a respected source of common-sense advice in resolving complicated situations. As an Association vice-president serving under Joe’s leadership, I benefitted greatly by his self-effacing example, good humor and dedication to making the world a better place.
