John Reynolds Donahue

1937 – 2020

 

John (Jack) Donahue, 82, of Winter Park, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2020 from complications following a stroke in 2019.

 

John was a devoted husband to Linda Louise Rose and the late Norma Jean Carnese, and beloved father of Susan (Robert) Herzog and John Nicholas (Gail) and step-father to Michael Solvig (Sandra Bowers); cherished grandfather of Luke, Brian, Eric, John Gordon, Tyler and Kyle; brother of James, Jeffrey and the late Joan Russell. He was the son of the late John Bertram and Jeannette (Reynolds) Donahue.

 

Raised in Howard Beach, New York, John attended John Adams High School and graduated from the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute as a Civil Engineer.  He began his Engineering career working in the subway system of New York City Transit.  After more than twenty years of service with the Long Island Rail Road, he retired as Assistant Chief Engineer, specializing in Design and Construction. John then brought his high level of expertise to the New York State Department of Transportation, retiring after ten years there.  John was a Professional Engineer, Licensed in the State of New York, and was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  He was a Cub Scout Master and Boy Scout Troop Leader in Kings Park, New York.  John was an avid bicyclist and completed the “Bike New York” non-competitive bicycle tour of the five boroughs of New York City for five consecutive years.  John enjoyed gardening, golfing and socializing with friends and neighbors.

 

After retiring to Florida, John continued golfing and added art and history classes to his hobbies.  John and his wife Linda enjoyed reading and cooking together, music and ballroom dancing, entertaining in their home and traveling in Europe.  John was a kind, easy-going person and a man of faith.

 

The Donahue Family will hold a service in Albany, New York.  A gathering of Florida friends will take place in the near future.
