Obituary of Joyce Marie (Day) Groat

Joyce Marie (Day) Groat went home to be with her Lord, Jesus, on November 29, 2018, in her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born to Harley and Olive Day in Flint, Michigan on May 20, 1930. Joyce loved Jesus, her family, her friends and her church. She was gifted with compassion, determination, boundless energy and a servant’s heart. She spent her life serving others as a wife, mother, and nurse. Her retirement in 1990, marked the end of a 30-year career and the beginning of 28 years as a volunteer.

Joyce moved to The Villages in 2001, and immediately made New Covenant United Methodist Church her home, where she served as a small group facilitator, a Stephen’s Ministry Leader and as a welcome and hospitality volunteer.  She had a special place in her heart for children and those who are suffering. She loved attending Bible studies and sharing her passion for Christ. Her life’s purpose was to tell the story of Jesus’ great love and to share His love with others. 

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald, her grandson Benjamin Groat, and her parents and six siblings. 

She is survived by her children David (Patti) Donoho, Connie (Marc) Giguere, Timothy (Tina) Groat, Jeannie (David) Bennett, Kim Hall, Lorine (John) Beattie, Alan (Linda) Groat, 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, her brother in-law and sister-in laws, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Heirs-Baxley Funeral Services (3975 Wedgewood Lane, The Villages) from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Joyce’s celebration of life will be held at New Covenant United Methodist Church (3490 Woodridge, The Villages) on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wildwood Food Pantry, Cornerstone Hospice or New Covenant United Methodist Church.
