Obituary of Lois Smith
Lois Strange Smith, formerly of Ocala, Florida went to be with her Lord from her final
residence at the Lake Placid Health Care Center on Friday, March 6, 2009. She was born May 24,
1908, in Dunnellon, Florida. Lois graduated from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia in 1929. At the
age of 100, she was honored as the oldest living graduate of the college. During her active
career, she taught music and English, and in later years special education. In 1935, Lois married
Ocala attorney W. Robert Smith [1903-1978]. For over thirty years, Lois was the pianist at First
Baptist Church in Ocala. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, the Alpha Delta Kappa
teachers' honorary sorority, and a Gray Lady hospital volunteer. As a strongly committed
Christian, her life included a love and devotion to a mission ministry of helping others. Lois
will be remembered as a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother to all of her family. Lois was pre-deceased by her parents and her beloved
husband. She is survived by her two daughters, Therrell S. Williams, Jacksonville, and Dr.
Roberta S. Ramsey, Lake Placid, and their husbands, Dr. A. R. "Rod" Williams and Dr. Russell W.
Ramsey; her six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in
Ocala, Florida at the Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14, 2009, with graveside
services to follow. Memorial contributions in her name are welcome at the Britt David Baptist
Church in Columbus, Georgia.
