Obituary of William During

William A. During William A. During, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009. This day, the world truly lost one to the Good Guys. Bill was born in Superior, WI, July 1, 1941. He spent his entire life in Superior, before moving to The Villages in 1999. He was a machinist by trade and spent many years working at the shipyards in Superior. He fulfilled his personal goal of retiring at the age of 48. After that he spent his time as a partner at Diane's Family Restaurants in Superior, WI and Duluth, MN. He was a jack of all trades and never had a problem he couldn't fix. He was in the Army and served in Korea from 1964 to 1965. Bill bowled in his younger years, and at one time was bowling five nights a week in different leagues. He was an avid fisherman, summer and winter. As a member of The Villages fishing club he fished the Gulf every chance he got; and never missed the fish picnic. He was a Green Bay Packer fan and saw every Super Bowl that was ever aired. When we moved to The Villages his passion turned to golf. He played about ten times a week, every week. His greatest pleasure was meeting his early morning golfing buddies out on the different courses. He never played to compete; only for fun. We got turned on to pickleball early on, and formed wonderful friendships on the courts. He loved to travel, and together we went to many, many places. His favorite destination was Kailua on the Kona Coast. We were fortunate to visit Hawaii twelve times over the years. On Sunday nights you could always find us at the Orange Blossom square dance. He felt he had a wonderful life and that he was granted so much more than most people. Bill is survived by his wife, Diane Kent; one son, David and Heather During of Duluth, MN; three step children; Cindy and Andy West of Deltona, FL; Allen Kent of Deltona, FL; and Debbie Moore of Blaine, MN. He also has three grandchildren and five step grandchildren. He has one brother, Richard of Seattle, WA; and one sister, Linda and David Anderson of Superior, WI. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, John and Avis During. Per Bill's wishes, he was cremated; and a Celebration of his life will be held at an open memorial at his residence: 198 Palermo Place, The Villages, Tuesday, April 7, 2009 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Remembrances can be made in the form of donations to the Cancer Charity of your choice.
