Obituary of Anna Walewicz Meile
Pineville, NC - Anna Walewicz Meile MeMaw, 95, died Tuesday, September 22, 2009. She
was born in Cliffside, NJ on February 24, 1914 to the late John and Pauline Bilowus. Her parents
moved their family to the Ukraine in 1921. In 1935, Anna came back to the States and moved to New
York City, NY, where she worked as a nanny while attending night school to learn English. In
1937, Anna became employed at the Waldorf Astoria where she worked for eight years. It was there
she met her future husband, Joseph Walewicz. They married on May 24, 1938. They moved to
Weirsdale, FL in January of 1953 where Anna worked as a waitress, first at the Howard
Johnson's Restaurant and then at the Holiday Inn, both in Leesburg, FL until her
retirement in 1976. After the death of her first husband on August 31, 1984, Anna married Karl
Meile in 1986 and they lived in Belleview, FL. Karl died July 8, 1991. Anna shared a devoted
relationship with Stanley Grzyl of Umatilla, FL until 2006, at which time she relocated to the
Dorchester of Charlotte in Pineville, NC. Anna was also predeceased by her brother John Bilowus
and sister Olga Bilowus, both of the Ukraine, and sister, Julia Yanchak of Cleveland, OH. Anna is
survived by her daughter, Ruth Ann Swander of Charlotte, NC, her grandson, Thomas Joseph Swander
of Fernandina Beach, FL and her granddaughter, Tara Ann Ferguson and her husband James Steven
Ferguson and one great-grandson, Joseph Hunter Ferguson, all of Fort Mill, SC. Anna loved to
cook, crochet afghans, watch old movies, and spend time with family and friends. She loved
flowers and gardening, going to flea markets, and loved to dance at the Belleview Pulaski Club.
The family wished to thank everyone at CMC Pineville (2 East) and the Pineville Rehabilitation
and Living Center (West Wing) for their loving care of MeMaw.
