Obituary of Samuel Powell
Samuel Grady Powell, 83 of Ocala, died on October 8, 2009. Sam was born to Grady and
Elizabeth Powell on January18, 1926, in Lake Wales, FL. He moved to Frostproof, FL in 1928 where
he grew up. Sam was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US. Navy. He was in the 1st day invasion of
Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Saipan. After returning from service, he attended the University of
Florida from 1946-1951 and earned his degree in Pharmacy, which was his life occupation. On
December 20,1947 he married Patricia Ann Metzler and began a life together that would last 62
years and beyond. He is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Linda Powell Ashworth of Summerfield,
sons Michael Grady Powell (Pamela) of Roanoke, Tx., Neil Wayne Powell of The Villages, and
daughter Mary Cynthia Powell Gartner of Belleview. His brothers Harry of Carpinteria, Ca., James
of Milledgeville, Ga. and sister Anne Powell Wilson of Elijay, Ga. and 11 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. He bought the historic Anti-Monopoly Drugstore at 40 S. Magnolia Avenue, in
Ocala in 1954. He organized the Marion County Pharmaceutical Association and served as its first
president from 1960 -1961. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 15 years, the Elks Club for 20
years and a Charter Member of Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club for 22 Years. In 1974 he
became Director of Pharmacy at Marion Community Hospital, now Ocala Community Hospital until his
retirement in 1984. Sam was a wonderful husband and father. He loved his family, cruises and his
rounds of golf at Golden Hills with lifelong friends. He loved the University of Florida and was
an avid Gator football fan. He will be so missed by his family and his many friends. Private
family services will be held in Frostproof, Fl on October 18,2009. In lieu of flowers, please
commemorate his memory with a contribution to Legacy House of Hospice, Ocala, Fl.
