Obituary of Eugene Petteway
PETTEWAY, Sr., Eugene H. Mr. Eugene H. Petteway, 87, of Ocala, went home to be with the
Lord Friday morning, January 22, 2010. Born in Dunnellon, he was a true native of Marion County.
During WWII Gene worked in the Norfolk, Virginia naval shipyard. After returning to Florida, he
began a career with Blockers Furniture that began as a delivery man, and ended 52 years later
when retired as Vice President and General Manager. He was always involved in sports, and was
quarterback for his high school's State Championship football teams. For many years he was an
official for high school football, basketball, softball and baseball games. He served as
president of the Ocala High School Booster Club in 1961-62, President of the Marion County PTA in
1962, was Chairman of the construction project that built Booster Stadium on 36th Avenue in 1970,
and was a member of the Gator Boosters for over 40 years. Gene was an active member of First
United Methodist Church in Ocala for 57 years. After coming to live with his daughter and her
family in 2004, he joined First Baptist Church in Ocala. Gene is survived by his daughter Carol
P. Roland (Jack), Ocala, his sons Eugene H. Petteway, Jr. (Linda), High Springs, Lewis C.
Petteway (Janis), Ocala, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years and the love of his life, Charlotte, in 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Hiers-Baxley Funeral
Services, 910 SE Silver Springs Blvd., with Dr. Edward D. Johnson and Dr. John Few officiating.
Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5-7 on Monday at
the funeral home.
