Obituary of Elmer Lee Dunaway

DUNAWAY, ELMER Ocala - Elmer Dunaway, 73, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in Ocala. He was born in Irvine, KY, son of the late Willie and Mollie (Powell) Dunaway. He moved to Ocala from Cincinnati, OH in 1990. He served in the Military Police in the US Army and after his honorable discharge he joined the Cincinnati Police Dept. in 1960. He was promoted to Specialist in 1969 and served in various positions on the Fraternal Order of Police, Queen City Lodge No. 69 Executive Board. He was elected President in 1973 and served until 1987. No one before or since him has served longer in that position. During his presidency, Lodge No. 69 made gigantic strides in wage negotiations and became a model for other cities in Ohio and around the nation. He was President of the Ohio State FOP from 1977 to 1979. He served on various National FOP Labor Committees and was National Trustee for Ohio from 1987-1989. Elmer was inducted into the Cincinnati FOP Hall of Fame in 2007. Elmer was a horseman and indulged his KY roots as a horse trainer, raising and racing Thoroughbreds. After retiring to Ocala, he joined his wife in real estate. In 1991, they opened Century 21 Affiliates. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Florida Association of Realtors, Ocala/Marion County Association of Realtors and was MLS President in 1999. He served on various committees including the Grievance Committee. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Jack Wall, sister, Teresa Dunaway, brother, George Dunaway, step-son, Thomas Knoerzer and son, Kirby Dunaway. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Donna Dunaway of Ocala, mother-in-law, Dolores Wall of Ocala, children & step-children, Robert (Jennifer) Knoerzer of Winter Springs, FL, David Dunaway and Michelle (Larry) Epperson, all of Ocala, Anthony Dunaway of OH and Staci (Billie) Owens of KY, his brothers, sisters and in-laws, Teena(Pete) Noland of OH, Luther Dunaway(Don Jenkins) of Ocala, Margaret Kerrison of OH, Larry(Jean) Dunaway of OH, Louise(Holbie) Holbrook of KY, Shirley(Scotty) Durbin of KY, Darrell Dunaway of KY, Kathy(Rick) Bennett of TN, Jeff(Anishka) Wall of CA and Peggy Wall of Ocala and his grandchildren, Kiley Epperson, Joshua and Ryan Knoerzer, Amber and Zachery Dunaway, Wyatt and Ryan Owens, Brandon Knoerzer and Adelaide Buckley and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Southwest Christian Church, 9045 SW 60th Ave., Ocala, FL 34476.
