Obituary of James Monroe Johnson
Marion Oaks - James M. Johnson, 85, of Ocala, died April 7, 2010 in Ocala, FL. He had resided in Marion Oaks since 1987. Jim was born in Ferryville, WI in 1925, son of the late Judd M. and Elsie M. (Haven) Johnson. He and his 8 siblings grew up on the family dairy farm. He was a US Navy veteran, having served during WW II in the United States and the Pacific. In 1947 Jim went to work for the Washington Daily News, and remained there until 1972, having worked up to position of Business Manager. Upon the sale of the newspaper, he transferred to the Pittsburgh Press, retiring in 1977 and became the Business Manager at Elizabeth Daily Journal, NJ, finally retiring in 1987. Jim loved to travel and with his wife Kay, visited throughout the United States. He was very active in his church, Our Savior Lutheran of Marion Oaks. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Allison in 2008 and his brother, Judd in 2010. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine Z. Johnson, Ocala, daughter Colonel (ret.) Elizabeth Checchia, Tucson, AZ; 7 brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Our Savior Lutheran of Marion Oaks with Pastor Wayne Kofink officiating. Committal services will be held at Florida National Cemetery at a later date with full military honors. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the church.
