My heart goes out to Sue and the kids...I am so sorry that we lost touch after our move from Miami. I know your loss is great and I can only hope that the love I know Bernie had for his family will be a comfort during this sad time. He was so proud of you all.
I remember Bernie as just about the most unflappable man I ever met in television. Even at the height of the mayhem surrounding the events of Hurricane Andrew he guided our station with a steady and sure hand...and, believe it or not...a sense of humor. Engineers like to be in control but during weather that literally threw human control to the winds, Bernie was the "calm in the storm." That was an enormous help to everyone who might have been tempted to panic. He was a thoughtful problem solver who demonstrated sincere concern for those who worked for and with him.
My husband, Don, worked for years in Bernie's department at WCIX/WFOR. I had a chance to see, first hand, the many kindnesses and the respect he showed to those under his leadership.
Bernie was the definition of a good and decent man. Our world is diminished by his passing.
