Mercer, James D. 88, of Chiefland passed away with his family at his side on June 26, 2010 at Haven Hospice of the TriCounties. Mr. Mercer was born in Judson-Levy County, Florida on March 28, 1922. He lived for many years in the Clearwater area before moving back to Levy County. He was the owner operator of Sunset Nursery in Clearwater and Turkeytown Farm & Nursery in Chiefland. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cross City, where he served as Elder and Deacon. He enjoyed flying his own Cesna Airplane, gardening, Building homes and Greenhouses. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1937 to 1939 and served his country in the US ARMY where he was a Radio Repairman in the 82nd Airborne Division and received 2 medals of Honor.
He is survived by his loving family, a wife, Lily R. Mercer of Chiefland, daughters, Rose Burdin of Zepherhills, FL., Carol( Marvin) Rogers of Springhill, FL., Betty J. Harsley of Americus, GA., Carrie Ann( Travis) Minton of Atlanta, GA., Loria Roselle Mercer of Port Oglethorpe, GA., Sons James Daniel ( Vickie) Mercer of Rome, GA., Douglas P. (Jeri) Lorio of Baton Rouge, LA, Griffin C. Lorio of La Place, LA., Gregory ( Yohanna) Lorio of La Place, LA., Lance J. Lorio of LasVegas, NV., a sister Winnelle Horne of Chiefland, FL., and many, many grandchildren , great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents James Dillard and Frances Horne Mercer, a son,2 brothers and 1 sister, a grand daughter and great grandson.
Visitation will be Monday, June 28, 2010 from 6-8pm at the Funeral home and Chapel Services on Tuesday June 29, 2010 at 11am at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services-Chiefland, FL., and burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Trenton, FL.
