Bernice E. Gartung
Bernice E. Gartung, beloved wife of John H. Gartung, passed away at Legacy Hospice House in Ocala on July 3, 2010 after a long illness. She was born in Astoria, Long Island, NY on March 2, 1917 and spent her early years there. In 1948 she moved to Medford, NY where she raised her family and worked as a librarian. She moved to Ocala in 1991 where she was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and active in the faith community. Bernice enjoyed reading, traveling across the country with John in their RV, and spending time with her family. She is predeceased by her first husband, William McCourt; daughter, Maureen; and a brother Charles. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John H. Gartung; children Kathleen (Christopher), William (Nancy), John (Rebecca), Patricia (Gregory), nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild due in July. Bernice is also survived by her sisters, Caroline, Alice, Ann and many nieces, nephews and caring friends. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend and will be greatly missed. May she enjoy eternal peace and happiness with God. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services - TimberRidge, 9695 S.W. 110th St., Ocala. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 8:30 AM at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, SR 200, Ocala. Interment will immediately follow at 10:30 AM at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
