Shirley Ausley died on September 28, 2010, in Ocala, Florida, after suffering a stroke.
Shirley was born in Columbia, South Carolina, but lived almost all of her life in Ocala. Shirley was a school teacher and homemaker, and was very active in Christian causes. Shirley served on the boards of directors of Time for Freedom Ministries, Harvest International and Foster Care Review. Shirley made numerous mission trips to Haiti, served as a counselor for the Women's Pregnancy Center and as a guardian ad litem for abused or neglected children, and taught Sunday school. Shirley had a passion for justice and the downtrodden, and loved children (both born and unborn). Shirley's goal was to love others as she was loved by Christ.
Shirley was married to W. James Gooding, Jr., until his death in 1956. From 1963, until her death, Shirley was married to J. Carlyle Ausley, Jr. Shirley is survived by her husband, by her brother and his wife - Wayland "Buddy" Hogan and Jean Hogan - by Shirley's children and their spouses - Jimmy Gooding and his wife, Kara Gooding; Mary Jo Lumsden and her husband, David Lumsden; Ken Ausley and his wife, Shari Ausley; and Steve Ausley and his wife, Michelle Ausley - and by Shirley's grandchildren - Justin Conelly, Hunter Turner, David Lumsden, Daniel Lumsden, Elisabeth Lumsden, Avery Ausley, Ausley Gooding, Lawson Ausley, Zane Ausley, KaeLeigh Ausley and Holland Ausley.
A Visitation Gathering will be held on Sunday, October 3, 2010 between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home at 910 East Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala, Florida. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 4, 2010 at 4:00 PM at Grace Presbyterian Church, 2255 SE 38th Street, Ocala, Florida
