I am so grateful to have been able to spend quality time with Uncle Rod over the past couple of years. Uncle Rod has always been so supportive. He came to all of my shows when I was in St. Augustine. He had a great sense of humor and I will never forget all of the laughs we shared. He was a wonderful uncle and friend. I'm really going to miss him. His advice to me was to live your dreams and live life to the fullest. He was a great example of that. I love you Uncle Rod and I will never forget you!

No amount of words can truly express the loss I feel with knowing Uncle Rod is gone. I can still hear his voice saying, "Hello Sweetheart!" every time he would call - as if it were only yesterday.
I am so grateful to have been able to see him when he made his tour out to Vancouver, BC late last year. It was a very special visit as he shared a lot of stories of his time flying planes and all the adventures that took place years ago (stories and experiences I had never heard before). The sparkle I saw in his eyes that day is something I will never forget. He boasted about the new phone he had, which ironically was very similar to the one I had just gotten...he was always on top of the newest and latest technological device out on the market, hahaha!
Uncle Rod always found a way to make time to visit me, where ever I was living, if I wasn't able to visit home to Black Cape at the same time in the Summer. He definitely was a 'planner' and could tell me exactly what time, to the minute, he'd be arriving on each visit - LOL. I will certainly miss those special times.
Uncle Rod, you are ever so deeply missed...but your memories will be carried on and cherished in my heart forever. Love Lisa xoxo

Growing up in Black Cape our families were neighbours. Roderic and my brother were ushers at our wedding many years ago. Roderic never forgot his roots. He could be counted on to attend special family celebrations. Last July he and Barbara attended Bev & Madge's 50th wedding anniversary party. Roderic was hale, hearty and full of good will. That is the way I'll always remember Roderic.
Our condolences to Barbara and the Brake family.

I met Rod in 1965, soon after we both were hired by American Airlines. We crossed trails for the next 30 years, always with a friendly greeting. He was well liked with A.A. and his flying ability admired. I'm told his last years were very happy, a blessing deserved. John Ward, Punta Gorda, FL

I Miss You Grandpa,
My Grandpa meant the world to me. I'm going to miss the excitement I had when I knew that he was coming to visit or the happiness I would see in his eyes when id hug him after a long time of seeing him. And the best was when he'd look at me for a second and be like wow Elizabeth your growing up fast. My favorite memory I had with him was when we were in Wisconsin and every morning I would wake up with him and we would go outside to feed the chipmunks. I never believed him when he would say that he could get the chipmunks to crawl right up to you and take the peanuts straight from your hand, But one day we got it to crawl right up on my chest and we just laughed. Or the times when we would wait till sunset and watch the deer come to eat out of the feeder. I've cherished every little moment I had spent with him and each and everyone will stay within me forever.
"If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you back again, No farewell words were spoken no time to say goodbye You were gone before I knew it and only god knows why, My heart still aches in sadness and secret tears still flow. What it meant to lose you no one will ever know, Since you'll never be forgotten ill pray to you today A hollowed place within my heart is where you'll always stay "
I love you grandpa,
Granddaughter Elizabeth

The Brake and McNair families lived across the road from one another in Black Cape (New Richmond) and still do today. Rod was 7 months older than me and we were playmates throughout our school years. I have met with him only on special occassions since we both left home in 1953. Strangely, one of my earliest memories of playing with Rod was celebrating the end of World War II back in 1945. As emergetic 10 year olds we hooted and yelled up and down the driveway at the Brake home.
We share the sorrow of Rod's passing with his family and friends.

Rob was one of the nicest Captains AA has ever had. Met him in the late 70's in SJC, he was always a pleasure working one of this flights. And he didn't change, never saw him in a bad mood and he always asked if he could do anything to help. Rod was a sweetheart when my beloved Tony died. Haven't seen him in years, but talked to him after he married Barbara, he sounded so happy!
Rest in peace, it's got to be hoot up there with all those guys!

Barbara, Violet, Sheila, Butch, Michael, Bryan, Paulette, Barry, Grandchildren, In-laws,and Others,
Roderic grew up across the road from where I was born in Quebec. He and my younger brother were schoolmates. Rod was always one of the Black Cape gang of kids playing baseball, Hide and Seek, hanging out at the beach, sledding and building snow forts in the winter. He will always be remembered as an intelligent, sociable, friendly, handsome, well-groomed man. Rod made an effort to attend reunions over the years and enjoyed reminiscing about old times. Our sincere condolences to all of Rod's family and friends. We will miss him.

I first met Rod when we both started flying with American Airlines in May of 1965. We were in the same class and as a result of that timing we would both attend recurrent training at the same time. We checked out as Captains in the Spring of 1973 on the B-727. When we had passed each check ride we had a small celebration on the flight home. We toasted each other with a Bloody Mary!!! Rod was an excellent pilot as I watched from the copilots seat in the simulator. Then it was my turn in the left seat, for the next two hours, as I tried to emulate his excellent flying ability.
Rod, keep those new wings bright and shiney until the time comes when I will join you and we will fly through the high untrespassed sactity of space, put out our hands, and touch the face of God.
Your friend,
Herb
