Obituary of Leroy Crowder Reed

Dr. Leroy C. Reed, Sr, age 78, of Ocala, FL passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. He was born in Iola, Kansas on April 18, 1932. Dr. Reed was raised in KS. He attended Maryland State College on a football scholarship until joining the US Army. After serving four years in the military service, he graduated from Emporia State College with a BS degree in Social Science. He married Ruth Etta Ford in Council Grove, KS, they were married for 52 years and raised four children. He continued his education earning his Doctorate at Nova University in Sociology. He was an instructor at Hampton Junior College and Central Florida Community College where he retired after 35 years. Dr. Reed was a Deacon at Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ in Ocala, FL where he was a member for 36 years. His hobbies included television viewing, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, visiting the local post office, yard work and auto mechanics. Family members include a wife Ruth Etta Ford Reed of Ocala, FL; son Leroy C. Reed, Jr. of Bowling Green, FL; daughter Ruth Annette Renee Hunt-Smith of Ocala, FL; daughter Sheri Marie Reese-Reed of Cocoa, FL; daughter Gail Scippio-Reed of Orlando, FL; brother Butch Reed of Portland, OR; sister Loretta Hill of Topeka, KS; sister Pauline Williams of Lawrence, KS; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. A visitation will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 910 E. Silver Springs Blvd, Ocala on Friday, March 4, 2011 from 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held at Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ, 705 NW 13th Ave, Ocala, FL on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ or Devereux Kids Central, Inc., 507B N. Market Street, Bushnell, FL 33513 in memory of Dr. Leroy C. Reed, Sr.
