Obituary of Stanley Ray Gill

S. Ray Gill, age 69, of Ocala, FL passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. He was born in Philadelphia, MS on March 22, 1942. He moved to Sarasota, FL at the age of 13. Ray joined the US Navy and served four years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with honors in Economics from the University of Florida in 1969 and a law degree in 1971. He worked in the Legal profession for 40 years. From 1975 to 1981 he was the Assistant State Attorney for the 5th Judicial Circuit. From 1985 to 1989 he was the elected State Attorney covering the 5th Judicial Circuit. He was known for establishing the Victim Witness, Domestic Violence and Mediation programs all of which went on to serve as national models. Ray also taught Business Law at Webster College and Central Florida Community College. He enjoyed playing Polo, the beach, fishing, technology, reading and time on his farm with his animals. Ray was an avid Gator fan. He was a wonderful man who loved a lot, cared about his community and was a strong advocate for his clients. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Patricia "Patti" Gill of Ocala, FL; son Steven Chris Gill of Ocala, FL; daughter Summer Rae Gill of Ocala, FL; twin brother Steven Roy Gill of Port Charlotte, FL; and a sister Charlotte A. Hamilton of Ocala, FL. A memorial service will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 910 E. Silver Springs Blvd, Ocala, FL on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 4:30pm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Marion County, 701 NW 14th Rd., Ocala, FL 34475, Horse Protection Association of Florida, 20690 NW 130th Avenue, Micanopy, FL 32667, or Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, 2300 SE 17th St. #201, Ocala, FL 34471.
