Just found out about Walt's passing. Today would have been his birthday. So sad! He was the nicest, kindest person - a true gentleman He was our brother-in-law for a time and we will always call him our friend. He enjoyed my oatmeal cookies and I sent them every year for Christmas. We visited him in the Villages a few years ago and he truly loved his home, the girls and his golf cart. We will miss him! He was a special person. With great sympathy----

What can I say about Dad? Like most of us he was many different things to many people; cherished Father, to Steve Terry, Scott, Tim, Jody, Todd, and Susan. He was also brother to Liz and Lynetta. He was preceded in death by his children: Susan, Jody, and Tim and wife Ina.
Dad was a good friend to many, a proud resident of The Villages ( in Florida), and a faithful caretaker to his four legged friends Bridgett and Purcilla who sorely miss him, and he was also devoted to his church.
Knowing Dad, he would want this occasion to be casual. Dad once proudly told me that he had gone an entire year of wearing shorts after having moved to The Villages. However, he said that he did wear long pants to church on Sunday, but that didn't count!
Dad would also want this occasion to be one of happiness, and celebration and not one of sadness. Dad was a happy guy and known and loved by many as I often witnessed on my trips to visit him in The Villages. He seemed to know everybody. As we took the golf cart into town everybody would wave to him, and once we were in town he'd stop and have a conversation with just about everybody in sight. He knew all the workers at Star Bucks and Barnes and Noble as if they were long time friends.
If you didn't know Dad but got within 3 feet of him I think he made it a point to become your friend. If The Villages is Florida's friendliest home town then Dad was The Villages friendliest citizen.
Much could be said about Dad's life. He was born in Illinois on July 21st, 1930-passed away on March 31st 2011. His Father passed away when Dad was a young child. He along with his Mother and sisters moved to California during his high school years.
Dad was a pitcher in the Pittsburg Pirates organization and after hurting his arm went to umpiring school to become a professional umpire. He was an umpire until my Mom told him it was time to get a "real" job.
Dad was a real sports enthusiast. He played for many years in the Western Softball Congress which was a men's semi pro fast pitch softball organization. He played for several teams including the Long Beach Nitehawks, and the Culver City Comets. Dad had a reputation of being a feared catcher, and hitter. The pitchers he faced could pitch upwards of 90 MPH from 46 feet.
Dad had a career that started off as a sales rep for Meade Johnson. He also worked for several other well known companies, in upper level sales management. Knowing Dad it wasn't the work the he did but the life long friends he made that kept him working for many years past retirement age. Even after retiring to The Villages Dad kept working at the local rec center. Not for the money, but for the friends he would make.
I think the biggest compliment that Dad would be proud of was not to be known for the type of work he did but for the type of person he became along the journey of life and that was of being a real people person and a friend to all.
Let us not morn, but rejoice in a life well lived and that Heaven may now have its friendliest citizen.
Steve Polk-Walt's oldest son.

As the youngest of the "Mantle'' cousins, I always looked up to Walt. Being in Illinois and he in LA, our visits were never often enough but always worth waiting for. The past few years we were able to enjoy visits and lunch and always those great hugs!
Our thoughts and prayers to the family from the "Illinois" cousins.

I had the honor and complete pleasure of Walts friendship for over 30 years. I worked for and with Walt at M/D Systems, Science Dynamics, SMS & Siemens. He was a coach and a mentor, but most of all he was a kind, honest and compassionate gentleman. All of us who knew Walt have been blessed.

I met Walt in the mid 80's when we both were sales managers for SMS, later Siemens. I worked with Walt for 15 years. In 2007 I moved to The Villages. I was walking my dog one night, shortly after I moved in, when a men yelled out "Bunker". My dog, Bunker, and I turned and there was Walt. What a wonderful surprise! And I wasn't surprised that he recognized Bunker though he hadn't seen her in 6 years.
Walt was kind and generous and a complete gentleman. We wish to express our sincere sympathy to his family. He will be missed.

Walt was the consummate gentleman. He was always sweet, kind and considerate of others. Walt also had a profound impact on my life. I met Walt and started working for him at Science Dynamics Corp in the early 80's. He had the confidence to hire me as his marketing assistant and allowed me to starting working in sales part-time. With Walt's support and coaching, that job at Science Dynamics began a decades long career in healthcare technology sales. I will never forget how Walt's confidence and coaching allowed me to enjoy a successful career. He was my mentor and my friend. I will never forget him.
My deepest sympathy to the Polk family as I know that you've lost someone wonderful.
Kind regards,
Cindi Merritt

Walter Polk was the sweetest, kindest man I have ever met in The Villages, with the greatest smile and the best hugs! I will light a "red" candle for Walter because every time I walked into Colonly Cottage Recreation Center I looked for him in his red shirt and his gorgeous white hair. May he rest in peace, . .

Walter and I moved in about the same time and shared many laughs about what palm trees to buy, landscapers, how do I get to Walmart, how does the sprinkler system work, etc. He was a gentleman who wore a great smile for everyone and I will truly miss not seeing him walking "His Girls" (the dogs) and him dropping my newspaper off at my door in the morning.
God bless you Walter, I know your in Heaven.

While gazing towards heaven, I saw my father-in-law there. It didn't surprise me.
After marrying, Walt worked hard to support a wife and their seven children. He taught them by example the importance of hard work, healthy eating, and keeping physically fit. For family birthdays & Christmas he was very generous with his earnings always including his daughter-in-laws & grandchildren.
I enjoyed all the times he used to take us out to restaurants on special occasions. Many times this meant paying for 12 to 14 people. I never heard him complain how much it cost. He just wanted us to have a good time. Sue & I especially liked desserts. It gave him pleasure to see that we ordered our desserts & had a good time. He was always a great host too.
Even though Walt's father died when he was 9 yrs old, he was a good father to my husband. He took the time to teach Steve one of his favorite pastimes, which was baseball. He also took him to UCLA Basketball games and other sporting events.
I have been greatly blessed by being a part of Walt's family through marrying his oldest son, Stephen. Even though I miss Walt, the fond memories he provided me will live on.
Enjoy Heaven Walt!
Love,
Jennifer Hill Polk

One day you will look up and see a couple of wagging tails running towards you from a distance.
