With fond but very sad reflections...I remember Herb Burkholz. My family spent so many wonderful times with Herb and his family over the years and I feel blessed to have known him. I remember as a young man the fun we had going to the Burkholz home, bright and early during deer season. Herb would always host a huge hunt on his beautiful property in southeastern Wisconsin and Darlene would get up before dawn to make a huge feast of pancakes and sausage. Then, Herb would lead the group out to the woods where we'd hunt and hopefully bag a deer. Usually about mid-day we'd gather by a fire to warm up before hitting the stands again. I can still remember all of us huddled around the fire trying to shake the chill from our frozen bodies and Herb teasing the other hunters about their abilities to bag a deer, or lack of! The laughing would warm us up faster than the fire in most cases.
I also remember his skill as a photographer. Herb had an eye for composition and light. He processed his own prints and in his later years I can remember he and Darlene visiting my folks in Statesboro, Georgia. He and my Dad were especially good friends and I remember them driving around the country of south Georgia searching for that special photograph.
My Dad passed away in 2000 and I'd like to think that the two men are telling jokes to one another and laughing about old times together now. We'll miss you Herb, but thank-you for all the wonderful memories!
