Obituary of Douglas W. Simpson
SIMPSON, DOUGLAS W. APPLEGATE
Reddick - Doug Simpson passed away on the beautiful morning of Good Friday April 22, 2011 at his home in Reddick. He will be missed by all who knew him. Doug served in the Navy during World War II as an air crewman on torpedo planes, an aviation ordnance man and as a gunner. Doug was a building contractor and worked in construction much of his life. After his retirement, his love of gardening was only matched by his love of making wooden toys (cars, trucks, airplanes, rocking horses, swings, & rocking chairs) for children. Not only did he give toys to most of the kids in Reddick, he also delivered his toys to kids in Virginia, West Virginia, and as far west as Montana. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Marjorie Kathryn, his sons; Clarence Richard & Monty Joe, his parents; Catherine Simpson, Clarence Applegate, his step-dad, Richard Simpson and his sister, Ruth Hocking. He is survived by a daughter, Pamela (husband Dick) Gerard of Gainesville, FL, his son, Paul (wife Pat) Simpson of Reddick, FL, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, a host of friends and hopefully his long-lost brother, Richard. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 2 at 10:30 am at the Reddick Presbyterian Church. Those who wish to honor Doug should fill a need for someone else, as Doug so often did for others.
