Obituary of Charles William Mitchell

Chuck Mitchell 1922 - 2011 Charles William Mitchell, AKA Chuck, was born in Omaha, Nebraska March 2, 1922 to Harry Elmer and Laura May Mitchell. He was the second son and his siblings included Genevieve, the oldest, Harry, the next in line and Chuck's twin sister Charlotte. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Omaha South High School. He entered the service in World War II and served in the Army Air Corp as a supply Staff Sergeant with the 531st Squadron of the 380th Bomb Group which flew B-24's known as Liberator Bombers. He was inducted into the service at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and attended Operations and Clerical School in Los Angeles, California, and operational training at Lowery Field in Denver, Colorado and Briggs Field in El Paso, Texas. The Heavy Bomb Group was put into overseas operation at Manbaloo, Northern Territory, Australia and eventually moved to Darwin, also in the Northern Territory. As the war progressed the group moved on to the Island of Mindoro in the Philippines and eventually to Okinawa for the end of the war. While in Australia, Chuck met and married Thelma Alice McConnachy of Adelaide, South Australia. Upon leaving military service Chuck relocated back to Omaha and went to work as a civil servant for the Emergency Crop and Feed Loan Administration Regional Office which later became the Farmers Home Administration, an agency of the Department of Agriculture. Thelma joined him in 1946, after the war, and they started their family with the birth of their son, Thomas Wayne in 1948. Chuck later transferred to the Department of the Army where he worked until retirement. He became a Management Analyst, conducting efficiency surveys at his various postings. His postings with the Department of Agriculture included Omaha, Trenton, North Platte, and Lincoln, Nebraska and his postings with the Department of the Army included Sioux Ordnance Depot, Sidney, Nebraska, the Inner-American Geodetic Survey and Army Southern Command Headquarters in the Panama Canal Zone and finally Defense Depot Tracy in Tracy, California, where he retired after 36 years and 1 day. At retirement he was living in Livermore, California with Wife Thelma. They lived there for 39 years until moving to the senior resort community The Villages, Florida to join his recently retired son Tom and wife Judy in June 2007. Chuck's wife Thelma passed away in January 2008 after 63 years of marriage. Chuck enjoyed golfing, billiards, bridge, rides in his golf cart, watching baseball and outings with his son and daughter-in-law. He was a life member in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), an active member of Sons in Retirement (SIRS) in the San Francisco Bay Area and a volunteer for the Bay Area Lupus Foundation. He is survived by his twin Sister Charlotte Moore in Santa Clarita, California and his Son Tom and Daughter-in-law Judy Mitchell in the Villages, Florida. He passed away on November 4, 2011 at 89 years young.
