Obituary of Joseph P. Smith Jr.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph P. Smith, Jr., who departed on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81.

Joseph's life was marked by unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community. Born on June 1, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, to Joseph and Paula Smith, he found enduring love with Marilyn Valek, whom he met on Christmas Night in 1960. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage and raised four children. Joseph's educational journey led him through St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Boys High School, and St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY. He was a successful stockbroker for 56 years who was passionate about serving his clients. Relocating to Marietta, Georgia, in 1975, and later to Citra, Florida, in 2004, Joseph continued to serve his community tirelessly. He volunteered countless hours at St. Francis Table, The Atlanta Union Mission, The Heart of Florida Youth Ranch, Ocala Farm Ministry, and The Waterfall Foundation, where he served on the Board for many years. Joseph was a dedicated member of St. Martin’s Anglican Church.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn and his parents Joseph and Paula Smith. Joseph is survived by his four children: Paula (Kurt) Evert, Brian (Rina) Smith, Karen (Steve) Bohn, and Colleen Smith (Fernando Vergara); eight grandchildren: Trey Dixon, Alexandra Dixon, Drew Dixon (Jessi), Stephen Evert (Starla), Ryan Evert (Carter Spriggs), Matthew Evert, Brianna Smith, and Colin Smith; two great-grandchildren: James and Charlotte Dixon; and sister and brother-in-law Liz and Dom Balsamo.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 23, 2024, from 12-3 pm at 1700 NW 165th St, Ocala Florida.
