Obituary of LaVerne H Tweedle

LaVerne H. Tweedle, 96, of Belleview, Florida went to be with his beloved Vonda Jean “Skip” on Monday, February 5, 2024. Verne was a native of Miami and moved to Belleview in 1977. In his youth he spent his time hunting and fishing as an avid outdoorsman. A 1945 graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, his dedication to serving others led him to join the United States Navy where he became a Medic, serving during the end of World War II. He would often tell stories of how important it was to him to be a medic at that time and take care of our wounded soldiers. In 1947 he married Vonda Jean, and they had their first child, David Tweedle. He was called back to duty during the Korean War. During this time, he pursued pharmacy and became Pharmacist Mate. Verne and Jean soon had their second child, Stephen Tweedle. After his discharge from the US Navy, he went on to the University of Florida studying at the College of Pharmacy. After graduating from the University of Florida, they moved to Sebring, Florida for a short time, where their only daughter Carol Tweedle was born and then to Miami. While in Miami, the family grew by one more: their third son, John Tweedle. After working for several family owned drug stores, he began his career with Eckerd Drug Store, eventually moving to Belleview, Florida to open a branch there. As a man with great integrity and in keeping with his love of serving his community, he became a commissioner for the City of Belleview serving for 11 years. Always a close-knit family all four of Verne and Jean’s children relocated to the area with their families. After retirement, Verne and Jean were able to pursue their passions of fishing, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Orange and blue flowed through his veins as a dedicated Gator, he could often be found listening to or watching UF sports. As a life-long learner he consistently encouraged his grandchildren and great grandchildren to pursue their higher education and led by example by constantly absorbing knowledge, particularly about the Civil War. In addition to his four children, he is survived by his sister Elaine Palmer, daughter-in-law, Pat Tweedle, three grandchildren: Stephen (Lori) Tweedle, Bobbi (Brian) Deriso, and Katie Whitaker; Great Grandchildren: Cullen, Laura, Will Henry, Liam, and Madigan. He is preceded in death by his parents LaVerne J. and Ruby Tweedle and his brother Delmar Tweedle.
