Obituary of Betty Jo Lossing
Betty Jo Lossing passed away on March 14, 2023, in Ocala, Florida.
Betty Jo was born in Columbia, South Carolina, the youngest of four siblings on August 6,1928. Her family moved to Sanford, Florida soon after her 7th birthday where she was raised by her widowed mother along with her 3 siblings (oldest sister Mary Nancy & identical twin brothers Pete & Al). She grew up in Sanford, graduating from Seminole High School and Florida State University where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Soon after graduating and marrying the love of her life Gerald D. Lossing on December 29, 1950, she began work as a Social Worker in the Sanford area. She soon gave up her job to follow her husband throughout his insurance career with stops in New York, Ohio, Missouri and Jacksonville until establishing their permanent home in Ocala, FL in 1966. Along the way she and Gerald raised two sons, Gerald David Lossing, Jr. and Stephen Brock Lossing. Both sons joined their father in the insurance business after their graduation from the University of Florida. She and Gerald celebrated 53 years of marriage before his passing in 2004. They were happiest when together and set a wonderful example of how to love and cherish one’s spouse.
Betty Jo was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ocala all her adult life. She was a member of the local Garden Club, the PEO Sisterhood and the United Methodists Women. She was an active volunteer. She truly loved being a Room mother, Cub- Scout mother and countless times serving as a Team mother for her sons. Always busy, while always being such a wonderful example for us all.
She went about living her life as the kindest, most loving, positive and supportive, selfless friend, wife and mom anyone could ever hope to have. Having only sons, she always shared how Blessed she was to have two wonderful daughters-in-law in Carol and Nicki that seemed more like daughters. Betty Jo loved her family with all her heart, especially her four grandchildren. Her grandchildren Hope, Cameryn, Davis and Sally were “her pride and joy”. She loved them and our whole family unconditionally.
Betty Jo was a huge sports fan and loved the Gators. She and Gerald hardly ever missed a home game and often traveled to away football games with friends and family. She loved boating, the beach and watching her sons play all sports. Always there with a hug and words of encouragement, she never missed a game her boys ever played. Sitting in the hot summer sun drinking coffee, watching countless mighty-mite, little league and Babe Ruth baseball games and into the Fall there for all their Flag and MCYFL football games and throughout all their high school sports.
Although we will always miss her love and smile, we are comforted knowing she’s in Heaven and reunited with “her Gerald”.
In honor of a life well lived the family will be celebrating her memory with a small family gathering. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution on her behalf to the United Methodist Children’s Home.
