Obituary of Dr. John Pursell Hughes
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. John Pursell Hughes, 91, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and physician who was born in Montclair, New Jersey. Dr. Hughes passed away peacefully at his Ocala home on February 22, 2023. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Carney Hughes; his sister, Jean Hughes Thompson and his parents; George Young Hughes and Irene Blake Hughes.
Dr. Hughes was also a devoted family man who cherished his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His son, John was a career Soldier in the Army. His daughter Jean West became a dedicated educator and his youngest child, Dr. Richard Hughes, followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. He was blessed with many grandchildren, Katherine West, Lindsey West, Richard Hughes, Alison Hughes, Matthew West, Andrew Maune, Erin Hughes, Derek Hughes, Aidan Maune and Audrey Hughes. He also was a proud great grandfather of both JT and Max. Dr. Hughes was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Dr. Hughes was a distinguished radiologist who dedicated his life to his craft. He graduated with Honors from Rutgers University as an undergraduate and Temple Medical School. Dr. Hughes was a pillar of the medical community spending his career at South Jersey Radiology Associates where his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.
Dr. Hughes was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid reader of non-fiction works, a golfer and fan of both Temple football; and basketball. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his bulldog Abby, whether it was watching a game, or simply sharing a meal.
Dr. Hughes's passing has left a deep void in our lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness and unwavering dedication to his family will always be remembered.
There will be a memorial service later this year at Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church in Stewartsville, New Jersey.
