Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Fowler Pitts

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Fowler Pitts, age 99, of Ocala, FL, died Saturday, September 3, 2022, at The Lodge Rehabilitation Center. 

Mrs. Pitts was born in Thomaston, GA, on February 15, 1923, to the late Simpson Barnes Fowler, Sr. and Lula Jewell Avery Fowler, the third of nine children. She was a 1940 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute in Thomaston, and before moving to Ocala, she was employed by B. F. Goodrich Company in the personnel department. She married Helms Pitts on June 26, 1946. The family moved to Ocala in 1961, when Helms became employed with the U. S Postal Service. Mrs. Pitts became active in the schools her children attended, and she was instrumental in helping both children establish their professional offices. She was a member of Oakcrest Baptist Church where she used her seamstress abilities to make items for mission projects, and she kept babies in the church’s nursery as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Pitts was an excellent cook, with her caramel cake being a favorite of all who were fortunate enough to taste it. She also enjoyed word search and jigsaw puzzles.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Pitts was preceded in death by her husband, Helms Pitts; her daughter, Dr. Claire P. Brown; three sisters, and five brothers. She is survived by her son, Dr. Jeff (Linda) Pitts of Ocala; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Patricia Fowler and Cherrie Fowler, both of Athens, TN; brother-in-law, Billy Daniel, of Thomaston, GA; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Oakcrest Baptist Church, 1109 NE 28th St, Ocala, FL 34470. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Services.  Rev. Byron Pitts will officiate, and interment will follow in Highland Memorial Park 1515 NE 3rd St, Ocala, FL 34470.
