My condolences to the Carlson family. I met Jim at Moorhead State while he was getting his Masters and I was an undergraduate in Music Ed. As a trombonist we played together in various ensembles. When we moved to Maple Lake in 1975 I was pleased to learn that Jim lived just down Highway 55 in Rockford while he taught at Augsburg. We were both involved in MMEA and had many meetings together. I grew up in Elbow Lake, close to Morris. Sometimes we visited about the prairie. I brought my jazz ensemble (Buffalo, Mn) to the UMM festival several times. It seemed our paths were destined to cross.
Jim had a hearty laugh and always a smile. He was a mentor of sorts and certainly a role model for a young band director. I know he loved life at the Villages.
Please know that Jim is in my memory.
Sincerely
Lee Kjesbo

One of the nicest people I’ve met in The Villages, I can only hope someone thinks of me as fondly as I remember him. Al Townsend (fellow golfer)

Kay, Jay, Brent, Kim and Family,
Please know our prayers and thoughts are with your family. We are far apart but very close in thoughts and prayers.
Jim transformed our lives and provided guidance to prepare both Sue and myself for successful futures as music educators.
In each student, Jim worked with, he saw their strengths and provided so many opportunities and ways to develop their skills
Jim and Kay both shaped our teaching lives through experience and guidance not only in college at UMM, but also during our teaching careers. Jim’s love for music and music education continues in each of his students, now teachers, that he worked with.
Love, peace, and prayers to Kay, Jay, Brent, and Kim and their Families.
Lee and Sue Varpness

My most sincere condolences to Kay and families. Doc was a powerhouse. I remember being terrified of my first private lesson because I didn’t want to disappoint. That’s where I was first introduced to the sandwich method of teaching. I used it throughout my career and always felt grateful he had as well. He will be missed by so many who loved him. Hugs to you all.

Jim's performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" on trumpet was so sharp, he could have been a professional recording artist. He did this at the HFA at UMM.
