Obituary of George Douglas Day
George Douglas Day, 79 of Ocala, FL passed away in his home surrounded by family on Monday, December 20, 2021. Born February 15, 1942, in Richlands, VA he was the son of the late George W. and Mayola Quesenberry Day. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. As a member of the United Mine Workers of America for twenty-three years, he worked in the mines of Kentucky and Virginia, mining coal. He and his wife retired to Florida in 1997, during which he and his wife followed their dream of owning an RV and traveling across the country. They took an anniversary trip to Italy in 2019 where he was stationed while in the Army. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, and His greatest pleasure was being surrounded by family and friends and was a stranger to no one.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Michael Day and infant sister, Mary Louisa.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Ruth (Riffey) Day of Ocala, FL, his son Douglas S. Day and wife Deanne of Ocala, his daughters Diane Brown and husband Kenny of Bandy, VA, and Kathy Berkland and husband Rick of Villa Rica, GA; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1- 2pm Monday, December 27, 2021, with a celebration of life ceremony to follow at 2pm at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in Ocala, FL. Burial will follow on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 10am at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens in Ocala. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
