Donald Nystrom

Obituary of Donald Norman Nystrom

Major Donald N. Nystrom, USAF (Ret.) of Lady Lake, Florida passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2021.  He grew up in Seymour, Connecticut and developed many interests, including art and a love of baseball.  He played ball in school and was even drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, but he made the decision to enter the United States Air Force instead.  He got married and he and his wife, Barbara lived in Brooklyn, NY, Tacoma, Washington, Eglin Air Force Base in Florida and Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi before moving overseas to Mildenhall Air Force Base in England. The couple had four children during this time.  When Don moved back to the states, the family settled in Nashua, New Hampshire until his retirement as a USAF Major.

Civilian life started with employment at Sanders in Nashua, and Kollsman, located in Merrimack, New Hampshire. He had a lifelong dream of living in Florida away from ice and snow and after his divorce, he moved to The Villages where there is an abundance of sunshine and warm weather to play golf.  He later married Patricia Dobens and they made it their business to travel and play golf all over the country.  Don loved playing golf, bowling, decorative lawn work and playing poker with his friends.  He had a big heart and a great sense of humor and a very kind way about him.  He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, his parents, Paul and Matilda Nystrom, older brother Paul Nystrom, Jr. and sister, Joyce Fischer.  He is survived by his children, Brian Nystrom of Nashua, NH, Donna Martineau of Rochester, NH, Keith Nystrom of Quincy, MA, Scott Nystrom of Winter Park, FL, and his step-sons Bruce Dobens of Texas and Mark Dobens of NH. He is also survived by his twin brothers Bruce Nystrom of Texas and David Nystrom of Virginia as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of friends and practical joke victims who will certainly remember him with a smile.

A memorial service will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral & Cremation Life Event Center, 3975 Wedgewood Lane, The Villages, FL 32162 on Friday, June 4, 2021 beginning at 10:00am. Committal service with military honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery beginning at 1:00pm.
