My mom Beverly Ferguson was an aide for Sid's class for many years at West Side. She passed away in 1992 at the age of 68. I was always happy to hear the successes they shared together. She thought very highly of him and was proud of his accomplishments.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Sid and I were classmates and 1967 graduates of Fitch. Our senior year, we both owned near-identical Honda bikes. I would drive from Mystic to Noank, and we would accompany each other to school. What fun and misadventures! "Easy Rider" (without the drugs!) comes to mind. Sid and I were both in the band and on the swim team. I always enjoyed his sense of humor, spontaneity, and company. I can relate to his enjoyment of the classroom and years of teaching, as I taught high school science for 41 years. I treasure the memories, and offer condolences to Melissa and family.

I met Sid when I came to Groton Heights to begin my teaching career. His room was above mine. Most of us were new teachers. Groton teachers were a fun and close group. You could go to any of the fun places and find someone who was a Groton teacher! Those were GREAT DAYS! Sid was a great tease. He always got the best of me. To get back,I would March my kids upstairs to sing him a song. I am so sorry for your loss . God bless you and keep you. ❤️

So sorry for your loss. Mr. Buttermore was one of my favorite teachers from years at west side middle. He was always there for any of us if we needed. Lending an ear to listen or a word of encouragement.

I am sad to learn of "Sid's death. I remember him as a fellow classmate from our days at Fitch Sr High and many days sharing the pool at the old Coast Guard Training Station at Avery Point as teammates. The Sid that I remember from those long ago days was a fun-loving and decent person, traits that, from this obituary, served him well the rest of his life. There is some comfort in learning that he lived a full life and, more important, had a positive influence on many lives of others during his time in this world.
"I commend you, my dear Sidney to almighty God, and entrust you to your Creator.
May you rest in the arms of the Lord who formed you from the dust of the earth.
May holy Mary, the angels and all the saints welcome you now that you have gone forth from this life.
May Christ who was crucified for you, bring you freedom and peace.
May Christ who died for you admit you into his garden of paradise.
May Christ, the true Shepherd, embrace you as one of his flock.
May he forgive all your sins, and set you among those he has chosen.
May you see your Redeemer face to face, and enjoy the vision of God, forever."

Dear Melissa and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Sid's passing. We taught together at West Side Middle School for a long time, both of us teaching Social Studies. We also spent a long time in the Groton Education Association together. Sid certainly enjoyed teasing me and though I would never admit it to him, I didn't really mind ...I knew it was his way of saying we were friends. I will miss my friend.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

As a special education teacher, I spent many hours in Sid's classroom. He was a magnificent story teller who could engage any student in the topics he covered. I still have my own notebook with notes from his stories. It was a great experience for me as a teacher. I will always value the time I got to spend knowing and learning form him.
