Joe was truly a good man with all the very important things that little phrase carries with it. I became friends with him when I joined the VAST swim team. He and Mary Rose were always so friendly and thoughtful. He always put a smile on my face and he certainly made his part of the world a better place to be. I will miss him but have lots of fond memories to carry with me. Joe's life was truly a life well-lived!

Kind,Thoughtful, Caring, Considerate, Generous - these and many more words describe Joe. A man who was always there for everyone who knew him but was definitely a "behind the scene" type of guy. He did so much for so many of his VAST teammates, and he will always be remembered as our dear friend.
Happy Laps, Joe

Hello Mary Rose, Karen, Julie and Kathy. I am so sorry for your loss. I viewed the Mass this morning. It was beautiful and your eulogies were so touching.I have many fond memories of my brother. He was the person who influenced me to go to Yellowstone after college. I had heard his stories about working there and how beautiful the West was. I am happy I took his advice! He also taught me how to swim correctly which I still enjoy today. He was generous with his time in helping our family when growing up . And along with you Mary Rose was very generous with family gatherings. So many more memories! I can still hear him singing "16 Tons" at family parties! Rest in Peace Joe . You had a wonderful life

I can not tell you how sorry I was to hear of Joe’s passing. Mary Rose, Karen, Julie and Kathy you have my sympathy. I will miss seeing Joe on my trips to The Villages. He was a great friend and I appreciate the many talks we had, his mentoring me as I began coaching Cross Country at Jane Addams, his interest in my running, his introducing me to pickle ball and so many innumerable things. I will greatly miss him. Dave Schave

Mary Rose, Karen, Julie and Kathy,
We will miss Joe. The last time we were with him was when he and your mother were doing a cowboy trip through Kansas. We had so much fun listening to Joe's plans and stories. We always loved being with him. He was a great person and you are all so lucky.
Dan and I hope to see you all sometime soon and celebrate his life. Much love Laura and Dan

Dear Joe,
Thank you for all the confidence and strength you instilled in your daughters. The world is better because of it. I've learned a lot from you and Karen over these last 10+ years that we've known each other - and it's made me a better person. Thank you for always checking in and for helping to instill in me a love for the National Parks. And thank you for always encouraging your grandkids to do their very best. I will miss you.
Aloha and mahalo,
Kirk

Dear Grandpa Joe,
We're very sad and miss you, grandpa. We miss hearing you sing Toora Loora Loora to us. We also remember our trip to Colorado together. We had so much fun, especially whitewater rafting with you. Thank you for teaching us to wake up with a smile and how to be ourselves. We love you!
Aloha and mahalo!

I love Mr. Rowan's advice to always strive for a personal best. I vividly remember telling him about my swim times and him asking "was that a personal best?" I'd say yes, and he'd give a huge smile, say great job, and give a big high five.
A great man and a great family. My family today of four kids have traveled all around the United States on road trips visiting state parks and having all kinds of adventures. My parents will say, "you guys are like the Rowans." I think that is a pretty big compliment.
Rest in peace.

Dear Maryrose, Karen, Cathy and Julie,
My deepest and most sincere condolences on the passing of Joe, your beloved husband and father.
I'll always remember him as a cheerful and helpful person. I was always at ease around Joe. I remember how he transported elderly and disabled Veterans to their doctor appointments. Joe was a wonderful American patriot. He also raised 3 lovely daughters, who went on to become very smart young ladies who are currently contributing to society in very important ways.
Joe has surely been granted entrance past the pearly gates of heaven, and is now doing God's work within.
I wish all of you comfort and peace at this most difficult time.
With love,
Colleen Pawlak
(Joe's niece)

As a former student and member of the X-country and track teams both years at Addams, I was blessed to have been coached by Mr. Rowan. One of the kindest and most supportive people I had ever met in my life. He was truly an inspiration.
Years after graduating and moving on in life I came back to coach wrestling at my alma mater. He would talk to me and try to in courage me to go back to school to get my teachers certification. I never did, but I continued to coach for years at many levels to try and inspire my students the way I was inspired by Mr. Rowan. Thank you for all the memories.

I'd like to share a few memories of my brother Joe. When we were little, I used to watch Joe and his friends play baseball and touch football in the street, Monroe St. I would sit on the curb and watch. as time went by we would go to Columbus Park to go swimming .Joe loved to swim.he was quite good at it. He won some Races and set at least one State record at St Ignatius High School. Sometime in the mid 60's he and a friend Dan Mangon went off on an adventure to Alaska.and Yellowstone Park. one day they went on a hike and ran into a bear and at least one of them had to climb a tree to escape the bear. He/they stayed in the tree over night. In the morning the bear was gone, probably looking for better food prospects. Back home I was given the task of painting the Garage and taking out the garbage. family duties.I sometimes took the garbage out but I did not paint the garage. When Joe came home from his trip he was furious at me because now he had to paint the garage when he thought it would have been painted.Anyway as the years and Decades went by we would laugh about what had happened and he would ask if I had taken out the garbage. It was almost like a ritual. When I moved to California ,we communicated a little less but not for any negative reason. we eventually started to communicate more frequently . When he asked me to come to Karen's wedding I was honored. It was a very special occasion. Joe would also send me things in the mail, and one of them was a plastic bookmark that said never sell your saddle, I never will. Joe was a good man who tried to live a good life I think he succeeded. He was very straightlaced but he was moral, ethical, honest, generous and more than I can say. I love him and will miss him and maybe some day we will meet again. you did good Joseph Patrick Rowan Jr. your loving brother BILL

I was lucky to be able to work with Joe for so long and recognized many great qualities of his: loyalty, helpfulness, generous with his time and above all funny! At our 7:15 A.M. meetings he would come out with some of the most outrageous comments that would make us all burst out laughing. Quite often that was the best part of my day. One great story is a student who could not remember Joe's name and proceeded to describe him as the teacher with the exploding hair. Another is the variety of vehicles he drove held together with duct tape and a prayer. One time Bruce and I were driving back to the suburbs from Chicago and we were behind a van that looked just like Joe's. I recognized the placement of the duct tape. We pulled up alongside ad even though we were honking the horn and I was waving, nothing. Joe had his eyes forward with that determination of his, no distractions. So many stories, priceless. We will miss you Joe. Ellen and Bruce

Dear Mary Rose and Family,
We haven't kept in contact for a number of years, but we will always remember the kind and patient encouragement Joe gave us as we tried to master the game of Pickle Ball. We never got very good at it, despite the excellent coaching! We pass your home nearly every day on our way to/from the mail station and find ourselves always looking to see a glimpse of you.
Months ago I was so happy to see Mary Rose and Joe at the swimming pool. Joe still being as active as he could and as kind as ever. Joe touched many lives and we are all the better for having known him.
Sincerely,
Andrea and Bill

Joe and I shared the PE office for 26 years. He was always willing to help everyone, teachers, students and staff. So many memories.
We shared several memorable road trips that he generously invited me to join his family.
Our last was driving the PCH Seattle south.
He was a great friend.

I was lucky to be one of a long time group of 6 Addams PE teachers who team taught in tight quarters. Joe was the man who could accomplish things only a special teacher could do. I remember during a badminton lesson I walked past Joe who was helping a not-to-talented student struggling with the serve. Fifteen minutes later, off to the side, there was Joe, still encouraging, still teaching, and there was this student, smiling, and finally...serving. May not sound like much, but, boy it was a lesson for this teacher. I’ll always remember how Joe could reach those who many may have thought couldn’t be reached. Thanks, Joe.

One of my favorite memories was of feeling like I was being stalked by a curly haired man at the Yellowstone National Park bookstore. When I finally took a good look at who it was, I realized that it was Joe. We had a good laugh then and remarked for years about what a coincidence that was.
