I had no idea Sonny passed away. The last time I saw him was at Lowery AFB although we spoke again many times. On one of those occasions. I was working on the 50th anniversary of the women’s Army corps at Fort McClellan and Sonny was at Fort Sam Houston. He was able to arrange for a letter from President bush to be sent to the WACs and handled it within 48 hrs which was pretty amazing. On another occasion we were in Atlanta and he was working on an arrangement with Ted Turner to create training with industry positions for AFN/Broadcasters. I will always remember Sonny as one of the most incredible— and difficult— people I’ve ever worked with, who at times with brutally hard on me— but who also spotted my talent, pulled it out of me, gave me opportunities and training that no one had ever done before. he had an encyclopedic memory and an uncanny ability to predict what a Commander needed and was always steps ahead of anyone else on the staff. I learned from him never to let anyone make your office the whipping boy for the staff either, and how to turn a dog around in a dogfight.
Through that experience, my career took off, and I often had to recall the clever things I learned from Sonny just to get things done. I was the one who arranged for him to receive the key to the city of Aniston prior to leaving Ft McClellan on my way to Stars & Stripes newspapers in Tokyo. He really deserved it because of all the great things he did to support the Anniston community in the military affairs committee; one of those was the weekly. I’m very special command retreats for the public was invited, the 14th Army band played, with a moving no narration by Ross Adkins.
Sonny would’ve been proud to learn what I had achieved on the way to Sgt. Major, college degrees, a concurrent reserve commission as a Captain, GS15, senior executive positions and the Army PA Hall of Fame. None of that would’ve happened without our experience together at Fort McClellan in the late 70s. I am forever and in his debt. Blessings to his family and all who knew him.

Our prayers and wishes for only fond memories go out to Sara, Scott, Elizabeth, Jessie, Lilly and all of Sonny’s family and friends on this sad occasion. Pat and I are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend. I met Sonny almost forty years ago in Germany and we have been friends and colleagues ever since. I was his deputy in his last active duty assignment in the Army. He was professional, exceptionally intelligent, loyal, forthright, funny, and caring. Sonny was the best public affairs officer in the Army. He had the ability to analyze the commander’s intent and motivate his team to execute public affair plans to maximize, the communities, service members, and local leaders understanding of important issues and gain their full understanding and support. We shared some difficult times and great successes. Through Sonny’s leadership and public affairs acumen the public witnessed the military’s role in the return and treatment of casualties from military actions in Panama and Grenada, the formation and drug intervention operations of Joint Task Force 6 on the U.S./Mexican border, and military support to major community events in San Antonio, TX. I will miss his wise counsel, humor, and the recollection of experiences together. Rest in peace. May you receive in heaven your well-deserved rewards.

Col Craven was my hero, he was of the best soldier I was blessed to serve with in the Army. He was a no bias no nonsense leader in my eyes. He was my mentor, he was never too busy to inquire how I was doing and share with me his early military experiences, he encouraged me to be all I can be. He ensured I was placed in a leadership position that enable me to develop my leadership skills and coaches me when needed. When I had a family emergency in the States he personally ensured that the resources that were available was utilized and provided to me. He recommended that I apply to OCS. He had such a positive effect on me that’s why I applied for Warrants Officers and eventually volunteered for Drill Sergeant school. He was an example of a true leader who cares about his subordinates his Motto was “Take Care of the Little Guys” He made the time to communicate with all soldiers under his commands. He didn’t view no jobs or positions as being trivial nor unimportant. My perception of him, he was a charismatic leader. He ensured many were accountable and hold their feet to it. R.I.P forever in my heart. The world was better with you in it. Condolences prayers and courage to your family .

I first met Sonny many years ago at Poitiers American High School, Poitiers, France. He was an upper classman and played in a band with my good friend Dan Johnson. Ten years ago, we became friends and he became a mentor. Sonny was assisting me with our class reunion in Memphis, TN. His kindness and advice were crucial in achieving a very good reunion. Over the years via e-mails, telephone calls and a possible visit to Memphis we enjoyed many conversations and laughter. I shall miss his friendship, advice, good hearty conversations which included many hours discussing politics.
I will remember Sonny as 21st Century renaissance man with a very keen mind and good heart. Rest in peace dear man.
