Obituary of Walter John Christensen, Jr.
Walter John (Jack) Christensen Jr., 93, loving husband, proud father of three and grandfather of four, passed away peacefully on Monday November 11th, 2019 at The Villages in Florida.
Born August 14th, 1926 to Walter and MaeBelle Christensen, Jack was raised, along with his sister Jane, in Millburn, New Jersey. An avid sportsman, Jack enjoyed playing tennis, baseball, hockey and golf and attending many classic baseball games at Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds.
After graduating Millburn High School, in 1943, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Gunner's Mate aboard the LSM-55 in the Pacific during World War II.
Following the dropping of the atomic bombs, Jack was part of a small group of military personnel who were taken by truck to Hiroshima and Nagasaki to view the devastation, a heartbreak not lost on Jack.
After the war, Jack returned home, graduated Ursinus College and started a long and successful insurance career in the New York metropolitan area, mostly spent with American International Group.
With an omnipresent smile, kind heart and sincere love of people, no one was ever a stranger to Jack. In June 1961, Jack married the love of his life, Joan Lois Uhl, a marriage that spanned over fifty-eight years.
Jack and Joan settled in Summit, New Jersey where they raised their children Nancy, John and Glenn. Upon retirement, Jack and Joan settled in Florida where they enjoyed over thirty years of great health, family, friends and travel.
Jack is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Nancy Schultz of Nashville, TN, son John Christensen of Marina del Rey, CA, son Glenn Christensen of Carlsbad, CA, son-in-law Walter Schultz, daughter-in-law Victoria Christensen and grandsons Chandler Schultz, Garrett Schultz, Luke Christensen and Everett Christensen.
