Obituary of Mary Alice (Slough) Narwold
Mary Alice (Slough) Narwold, 92, passed away peacefully at her home in Ocala, Florida, on Thursday, July 11, 2019.
Of the many things she loved about life, golf came first, followed by her faith, her home and family, her friends, and playing bridge.
She is survived by Sara Roberts Yindra, husband John and sons Justin and Cody of Portland, ME, Carolynn Roberts of Ocala, FL, Geordie Narwold of DeLeon Springs, FL, (Geordie’s wife Beth Narwold preceded Mary Alice in death in December, 2018) Chris Narwold, wife Bobbi and daughter Lea of Bear, DE, and Stu Levine of Tilghman Island, MD, (Stu’s wife Sally Narwold Levine preceded Mary Alice in death in December, 2013)
Born Mary Alice Slough on February 14, 1927 to Clara and Guy Slough of Buena Vista, VA, she was the eldest of 4 siblings, and is survived by her sister Betty Jane Rinker, of South Boston, VA.
Mary Alice graduated from the Roanoke Hospital School of Nursing, September 25, 1948 and embarked on a career as a Registered Nurse. She married twice, first to Herbert E. Roberts, Jr. of Roanoke, VA, whom she met as a patient while working at the Roanoke Hospital. When Herb passed in August,1971 she went back to her nursing career. She later married Richard H. Narwold of Wilmington, DE, who remained her partner until his passing in May,1994.
She enjoyed an avid interest in golf with both spouses, which brought she and Richard to Ocala, after spending many years in Delaware, where both husbands had worked for The DuPont Chemical Company. With Richard she traveled to play on many of the World’s famous golf courses. Carolynn’s compassionate caregiving of 9 years allowed Mary Alice to stay in her home and be loved and cared for. In the last months local agencies Touching Hearts and Safer at Home provided outstanding in home care. Hospice of Marion County was a source of constant help, guidance, and care for us all and the family is forever grateful to these 3 resources within the community.
