Obituary of Isabel Sylvia Avila Curry

Isabel Sylvia Avila Curry known as ‘Izzie’ passed away on April 5, 2019. She was a third generation Conch, born in Key West, FL on February 2, 1932. She was preceded in death by her parents Mario Avila and Laila Perez Avila, Tio Blas Rodriquez, sisters Elena del Valle and Gloria Bezanilla Vaine, sister in-law Maria (Cody) Konsdorf, and niece Tammy (Harden) Brown. Izzie is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Carl R. Curry, son Michael C. Kobold, daughters Ann-Marie (Andy) Thurber, Sharon (Ron) Rose, twin sister Carmen Avila (Paul) Wilson, sister in-laws Carol Cody (Gene) Harden, Lorraine Curry, Juanita Curry, step-daughter Dolores Curry (Tom) Landels, grandchildren Cody Andrew Thurber, Marlene Isabel Thurber, James Russel Gray Jr., Amber Elizabeth Rose, Patrick (Sara) Landels, Felica (Cody) Henkes, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. Izzie graduated from the Convent of Mary Immaculate in Key West, FL in 1950. Upon graduation she worked as a dental assistant in Miami, FL. In 1954 she achieved her dream of becoming an airline stewardess. She later moved back to her island home and raised two daughters. In 1994 she retired from the City of Key West where she worked in the Revenue Department. Izzie was a founding member and treasurer of the Key West Chapter of Silverliners. After retirement she reconnected with childhood friend Carl Curry. They married in 1998 and together they spent many years traveling and hiking the mountains of northern Georgia. In 2002 they moved to The Villages, FL where they enjoyed socializing with other retired Conchs. Izzie was dedicated to family and friends. She kept in touch with numerous people throughout her life. When asked about her favorite times in life she responded: having her children, flying for Eastern Airlines, and marrying the love of her life Carl, who made her golden years truly golden. As in life she continues to give with her final wishes to donate her body to the University of Florida Anatomical Board for education and research. Her ashes will then be spread over the Gulf of Mexico. As per her wishes there will be no memorial service. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed as she now flies with angels.
