Obituary of Edward J. Dunne

Edward J. Dunne, 85, of Ocala, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s disease, on November 5, surrounded by family at home.

Ed was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 16, 1933, the only child of Jeremiah Dunne and Bridget (Grimaldi) Dunne.  Ed married Nancy (Deming) Dunne on September 6, 1958.  They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary at a party attended by family and friends.

For 28 years Ed was an administrator at Chemical Bank, in New York.  After the family moved to Staten Island, Ed became a successful car salesman for several years, and then worked in security at J.P. Morgan Bank, in New York.  In 1996 Ed and Nancy moved to Ocala, where in recent years they developed a number of close friendships, most of whom were also transplanted New Yorkers.

Ed was a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War.  He did not see any action while aboard the U.S.S. Tarawa, but he often spoke about his service and the many exciting countries that he experienced while in the Navy.  He was a member of the American Legion, Post 27, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4781, both in Ocala.

Ed had a wry sense of humor and, many have said, a pretty good singing voice.  He had an eclectic taste in music, ranging from Tom Jones and Johnny Cash to the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son Edward C. Dunne, of Vernon, CT; his son Robert Dunne and his wife, Mary Bellor Dunne, of Manchester, CT; and two grandchildren from Robert and Mary, Charles and Mary Alina Dunne.

Viewing hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, at Hiers Memorial Chapel at TimberRidge, 9695 SW 110th St.  A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at Queen of Peace Church, 6455 SW State Road 200, at 8:30 a.m., after which he will be buried at 10 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park, 1515 NE 3rd St.

Ed’s survivors wish to thank the nurses and aides at Hospice of Marion County, who provided outstanding care in making his final days as comfortable as possible.  Friends of the family—Flo Scuoto, Cathy McKelvey, and Gerry Vitale especially—were constant companions to Ed and Nancy, and their love, friendship, and help will never be forgotten.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marion County, 3231 SW 34th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34474.
