I appreciate all the hard work that Mr. Brown did for our community. My daughter was one of the participants in their gymnastic classes. Thank you for such a thoughtful leader.

Uncle Harold - what a dear, kind, giving man he was. He and Aunt Shirley always made me feel at home, whenever I would spend time with them at their house, which was quite often. In fact, their daughter Sandy and I were together so much and participated in so many activities together that many people would have thought we were sisters, instead of being cousins. He also liked to have fun with us kids, at the dinner table especially. If you asked if you could have some potatoes, or corn, or whatever, he'd start to pass the bowl to you and then snatch it back from you before you could grab it, saying, 'had it long enough?", and we'd chuckle every time. If one of us (girls especially) wasn't eating the vegetables on our plate, he'd say, "eat it -- it'll put hair on your chest!" And of course we'd say, "but we don't want hair on our chests!" (and laugh some more).
If Uncle Harold knew you had a need, and he had the ability to help you, he'd take action and do whatever he could for you. His heart really went out to kids, of all ages. His work with the Park District and the expansion of so many programs was rooted in that love of children and the community.
I know one thing, Uncle Harold loved his dear Shirley, so very much. I'm glad to know he's in heaven now, and finally at peace, the Harold we knew and loved. His parents and brothers and sisters were there to greet him, I'm sure.
We love you, Uncle Harold.

How do you write a few words about an Uncle that positively impacted your childhood?
God really blessed me with Uncle Harold and Aunt Shirley. I remember going to their house and having toasted Cheese sandwiches and Ice tea. Harold invested time in me and took me to major league baseball and football games, he would watch me play little league baseball and I still have the catchers mit that he gave my son many years ago. Harold loved Jesus Christ and his church and he loved helping the homeless in the Ocala forest. Harold loved Shirley very much and he loved me, my wife, Linda and our entire family. Just imagine Harold in Heaven saying "If you could just see me now".

Uncle Harold and Aunt Shirley had a true love story to tell. And Uncle Harold told it to us many times. He absolutely loved to tell the story of getting his commanding officer to let him off the train (for the bribe of a few pairs of ladies nylon hosiery) so he could get to Aunt Shirley to declare his love for her. He never tired of telling it and as I look back it was really good to hear it and remember along with him. Their morning ritual of waking in the morning and looking over at each other and saying "it sure is good to see you" was another wonderful declaration of their love for each other. I know it will not be easy in the days ahead for Aunt Shirley, after 66 years of marriage, to face those mornings alone, but she is confident, and so are we that one day in heaven those words will be spoken again. "It sure is good to see you." Let's all make sure that we are there to say them too. "Uncle Harold, it sure is good to see you." Linda Schwalbe

I have many good memories of Harold and Shirley Brown. We first became friends many years ago when my husband, Norman Grote, worked for him at the Park District and played softball with a men's travelling team that Harold formed and even later when I was fortunate enough to be hired to work in the Park District Office. I have considered them as good friends for these many, many years. Harold has already been missed in Granite City for a long time. Heaven has received a very good person. Think he'll get a team organized up there with all of his former players and friends?

Harold Brown was a very good friend to our family and had the respect of all the people in our town He was the Director of Parks and Recreation in Granite City, IL for many years He was one of the best at organizing baseball and softball programs, as well as recreation programs for all ages. I worked for Harold as his secretary for many years and we were a two man office staff for a long time. He was a very hard worker, putting in many long hours most every day of the week. As a result, we have several very nice parks and outstanding facilities in our town. He definitely left his mark on our park system. He told me many times that he had two goals in life - one to marry his wife, Shirley and two, to start a recreation program for the residents of Granite City He did both. His lovely wife, daughter Sandy, grandaughter, Ellen and great grandaughter Zoey were the true loves of his life.
We will miss talking to you Harold. Our family, Babe, Sue, Brett, Kirk and Keith Champion send our love and sympathy.to Shirley and Sandy.
