Obituary of Virginia Margaret Barton

Virginia Margaret (Rasmussen) Barton, 93, of Ocala Florida passed away at home on May 31, 2023. She was born on December 30, 1929, to Elmer and Veronica Rasmussen, and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She lived in Iowa, Missouri, and California, before settling in Orlando, Florida with her husband, Paul in 1962. She spent most of her adult life there before moving to Ocala in 2014.

She spent over thirty years as a teacher, primarily for children with special learning needs.  In her retirement she volunteered as a Master Gardener, and enjoyed many outdoor activities.  She was an avid biker and camper.  She was especially involved with the Florida Trail Association as a hiker and trail maintainer.

Virginia is survived by her sister Mary Ann Wahl; son Greg and daughter-in-law Beth; and grandchildren, Elissa, Paige, and Stephanie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, her parents Elmer and Veronica; and her brothers John Rasmussen, Richard Rasmussen and Fr. James Rasmussen.

A funeral mass for Virginia will be held at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala (5 SE 17th St, Ocala, FL 34471 – Live Stream -  https://blessedtrinity.org/) on Saturday, June 17 at 10:30am. Visitation will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in Ocala (910 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala) on June 16 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florida Trail Association. Online condolences may be sent to www.hiers-baxley.com.
