Obituary of Caroline Edith Smith

Caroline Edith Smith, 91, of Ocala, Florida passed away at West Marion County Hospital surrounded by family on February 11, 2023. She was born on September 26, 1931 in Williamsburg, VA. She attended Matthew Whaley from kindergarten thru her senior year of school and graduated in 1949. Caroline dedicated over 40 years of her life to the US Government as a civil servant, working on both Fort Eustis, VA and Fort Carson, CO. She enjoyed traveling the world, going on cruises, and spending time with family. Caroline also loved to square dance, round dance, collect stuffed bears, cheering for “her” Denver Broncos, and although it doesn’t sound as if she had time…relax.

Caroline is survived by her loving husband, Merrill; her children, Gary Buchanan, Bill (Suzanne) Buchanan, and Hugh Buchanan; stepchildren, Tim Rutrough, Becky Rutrough; grandchildren, Paula Sue Buchanan, Roy Buchanan, Michelle Buchanan, Ryan Buchanan, Ben Buchanan, Sarah Buchanan, Jared Buchanan, and Jewel Buchanan; great grandson, Josiah Buchanan; sibling, Elizabeth R. Hendriksen; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; George F. and Coral B. Rogers; her son, Roy C. Buchanan Jr.; and her daughter, Pamela K. Buchanan.

Caroline will be laid to rest at 2:30 pm on Friday, June 16, 2023 in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. A memorial service for Caroline will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Advent (11251 SW Highway 484, Dunnellon, FL) on Saturday, June 17 at 11:00am.
