Karl was my best and truest friend. He was an over-achiever even in grade school, president of the Oshkosh High School senior class of 1959, and a scholastic star. We shared countless youthful adventures, stories and hopes during schooldays and summers in Oshkosh, but I early learned that Karl did not like to lose an arguement. Visiting him in Sun Prairie (Univ Wisc) he would often note the difficulties of having a thesis professor whose journal articles reached one conclusion, while Karl's carefully constructed feedback questionairs and analysis reached another. Except for occasional holiday cards we might lose touch for a few years, but always when I visited him the bond of friendship remained strong. I was there when Olga and Karl were married, and my wife and I visited them several more times (Karl then not liking travel). I always rejoiced in rehearing how scholarly Karl and passionate Olga were reconciled about a student grading problem on a plane trip to Caterpillar in Peoria, their lives forever after entwined. They were a couple and match who were the perfect balance of yin and yang. Our last visit was in Feb 2020, after Olga had passed and after Karl had lost so much weight. But his fighting spirit was still very much present, and he was pleased with helping neighbors write and title books. I shall never forget his story of the last days of Olga, and his feelings in having to authorize her doctors to cut off her gorgeous head of hair for cancer treatment, only to lose her shortly thereafter.
