Obituary of Bette J. Johnson

Bette J. Johnson, age 88, retired school secretary, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021 in Ocala, Florida.

A native of Dothan, Alabama, Mrs. Johnson moved to Marion County in 1967 after her husband’s retirement from military service. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church. For several years, she held various elected offices in county and school PTA’s and the Greater Ocala Woman’s Club.

During her 37- year career at Anthony Elementary School, she watched many children grow up as well as their children and grandchildren. She loved her job and the many friends she made there.

She enjoyed bowling, golf, and her book club. Her lifetime love of travel brought her to many cities and countries around the world. She loved cruising with her family and friends and cherished the many memories from those travels. She was a dedicated sports fan. She followed the Atlanta Braves, Florida Gators and the Tampa Bay Rays often watching multiple games at the same time using her iPad and the television.

Survivors include sons Lt Gen Charles L. Johnson (USAF, Ret), Bonita Springs, FL, David M. Johnson, Ocala, FL and Douglas W. Johnson, Punta Gorda, FL and her daughter, Catherine L. Schrock, Seattle, WA, sister Phoebe N. Miller of North Charleston, SC and brother H. Grady Underwood of Tallahassee, FL; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  She was preceded by her husband of 51 years, Charles L. Johnson, Sr.; and son Christopher L. Johnson.

Funeral mass will be Thursday, October 7, 2021 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church, 4047 NE 21st St, Ocala, FL 34470.  Vault interment will follow at Anthony Cemetery, Anthony, FL.  Arrangements entrusted with HIERS-BAXLEY Funeral Services-Boulevard, 352-629-7171.  Sentiments may be left online at www.hiers-baxley.com.
